  • Under the instructions of your computer, an electronic circuit in the printer determines which nozzles to shoot to print a particular color at a certain point on the page.
  • The circuit activates each of the nozzles by passing an electric current through a small resistor inside.
  • When electricity flows through the resistance, it heats up.
  • The heat of the resistor boils the ink inside the nozzle immediately next to it.
  • As the ink boils, it forms an ink vapor bubble. The bubble expands enormously and bursts.
  •  When the bubble bursts, it projects the ink it contains onto the page at a precisely formed point.
  • The collapsing bubble creates a partial vacuum in the nozzle which draws more ink from the ink tank, ready for printing the next point.
  • During this time, the whole print head moves to the side, ready to print the next character.

What are the main parts of an inkjet printer and the roles?

In an inkjet printer we have:

  • The gears driven by an electric motor, turn the rollers which advance the paper through the printer.
  • A flexible flat cable carries the printing instructions from the electronic circuit inside the printer to the mobile cartridge.
  •  The plastic rollers and rubber pinch the paper so that it can be moved in the printer with absolute precision.
  • A sturdy metal rail guides the printer head as it moves back and forth.
  • Of sharp wheels at the front of the printer help capture paper safely and accurately move.
  • The print cartridge prints left to right then reverses the print information and prints backward from right to left. This is called bidirectional printing which allows pages to be printed much faster.
